14 songs to put the “POW” in empowerment for International Women’s Day
It’s International Women’s Day on Friday March 8th. While it’s always a good time to celebrate everything female, this year’s theme is #balanceforbetter – building a gender balanced world. Since the music industry is very male dominated we thought it important to point out that some pretty awesome music was made by women. So find a song you like from our playlist, turn it up loud and feel the power!
Friday is more than just a celebration of women’s achievements – it’s also a nod to the past and the future of every strong woman’s legacy. You are a strong woman, I am one, and my daughter is one. Your sister is one as well as your Mom. It doesn’t matter where you’re going or where you came from, we are united in our sisterhood. Don’t just celebrate your womanhood tomorrow, celebrate it every single day!
Below is our salute to strong women with our feminist playlist, songs by amazing women, songs we love to sing out loud, songs that reflect how we feel in love and life…
Playlist:
1962 – Dionne Warwick – Don’t make me over
Empowering line to remember: Don’t pick on the things I say, the things I do, Just love me with all my faults, that way that I love you
1963 – Lesley Gore – You Don’t Own Me
Empowering Line to remember: You don’t own me, Don’t try to change me in any way, You don’t own me, Don’t tie me down ’cause I’d never stay
1965 – Nina Simone – Feeling Good
Empowering Lines to remember: It’s a new dawn, It’s a new day, It’s a new life, For me, And I’m feeling good
1966 – Nancy Sinatra – These Boots Are Made for Walkin
Empowering Lines to remember: These boots are made for walking, And that’s just what they’ll do, One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
1967 – Aretha Franklin – Respect
Empowering lines to remember: Oh (sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me), A little respect (sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me), Whoa, babe (just a little bit), A little respect (just a little bit)
1969 – Jeannie Riley – Harper Valley PTA
Empowering Lines to remember: Well it happened that the PTA was gonna meet that very afternoon, And they were sure surprised when Mrs. Johnson wore her mini-skirt into the room
1975 – Loretta Lynn – The Pill
Empowering Lines to remember: This old maternity dress I’ve got, Is goin’ in the garbage, The clothes I’m wearin’ from now on, Won’t take up so much yardage, Miniskirts, hot pants and a few little fancy frills, Yeah I’m makin’ up for all those years, Since I’ve got the pill
1978 – Gloria Gaynor – I Will Survive
Empowering lines to remember: Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I’ll stay alive, I’ve got all my life to live, And I’ve got all my love to give and I’ll survive, I will survive
1981 – Joan Jett – Bad Reputation
Empowering Lines: I don’t give a damn, ‘Bout my reputation, I’ve never been afraid of any deviation, An’ I don’t really care, If ya think I’m strange, I ain’t gonna change, An’ I’m never gonna care, ‘Bout my bad reputation
1983 – Donna Summer – She Works Hard for the Money

You thought I wouldn’t grow without ya, now I’m wiser! You thought that I’d be helpless without ya but I’m smarter
2003 – Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves – Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox
Empowering Lines to remember: Now this is a song to celebrate, The conscious liberation of the female state! Mothers, daughters and their daughters too. Woman to woman, We’re singin’ with you. The inferior sex got a new exterior. We got doctors, lawyers, politicians too. Everybody, take a look around. Can you see, can you see, can you see. There’s a woman right next to you.
