On Becoming the Early Bird! Training yourself to wake up earlier (without hating your alarm)

Did you wake up bleary-eyed on the first day of Daylight Saving? For many of us, that lost hour of sleep feels like a rude awakening… literally! But seasonal changes can actually be the perfect moment to gently train yourself to wake up earlier and create a morning routine that feels calmer, more intentional, and surprisingly energizing.
How about instead of fighting the seasonal shift, you use it as a reset button? If you struggle to wake up early but want to change that, then here’s how to make waking up earlier feel natural as winter turns into spring.
Let’s face it, winter just begs us to stay in bed a little longer. Darker mornings, heavy blankets, and colder weather all together signal our bodies to slow way, way down. As days grow longer and the light returns, our internal clocks naturally begin adjusting. Spring offers a quiet invitation to shift our routines. Waking earlier, moving more, and welcoming a little extra daytime into our lives.

Rather than forcing a dramatic change, treat this as a gentle seasonal transition. Even 10-15 minutes earlier each week can make a noticeable difference.
Starting the night before is one of the simple secrets to getting up earlier the next day. Creating a calming evening ritual signals to your body that rest is coming. Dim the lights and step away from screens to give yourself the permission to unwind.
Simple habits can help:
1. Ban phone interaction 30 minutes before bed
2. Warm showers or baths are a perfect way to end the day
3. Reading, even just a few pages, will send you off to good sleep
When evening routines feel peaceful rather than rushed, mornings tend to follow the same rhythm.

Another tip for embracing earlier mornings is to reset your circadian rhythm. As spring approaches, natural sunlight arrives earlier in the day. Opening those curtains first thing in the morning or stepping outside for a few minutes for some fresh air can really help. Mornings still dark where you live? Try a sunrise-style alarm clock that mimics natural light and gently brings you out of sleep.
Remember loving Christmas morning when you were a kid or bounding out of bed on the morning of your birthday? The crack of dawn couldn’t come quickly enough! Embrace that same excitement by giving yourself a reason to wake up.
Maybe it’s a quiet cup of coffee before the house wakes up. Morning yoga? How about a walk around the neighborhood while it’s quiet? Even simply enjoying the peacefulness of an uninterrupted morning can become a reward.
The key is to make the first moments of your day feel like something you WANT rather than something you HAVE to do… try it!

“One of the reasons that Spring feels so fresh is that it symbolizes renewal. Let this season become about fresh starts and small shifts that bring about lasting habits for you!“
Another way to embrace an earlier morning start is to give yourself the luxury of easing into mornings slowly. Instead of jumping straight into the day, give yourself a few minutes of comfort. Lounging in a soft robe, a cozy wrap, or your favorite PJs can make the transition from sleep to morning feel less abrupt and more like a gentle easing into the day.
Small comforts create rituals and rituals make habits stick.
Adjusting your wake-up time isn’t about perfection. Some mornings will be easier, especially during the transition into daylight saving time. The goal isn’t to become a 5 AM productivity guru overnight. It is to simply align your routine with the natural rhythms of the season.
One of the reasons that Spring feels so fresh is that it symbolizes renewal. Let this season become about fresh starts and small shifts that bring about lasting habits for you. Sometimes the most powerful change begins with something as simple as waking up just a little earlier to greet the day. Embrace your inner early bird and we’ll see you in the next blog!
