Sip, Soak, Wrap, Self-Care ideas… and gifts for pampering yourself during and after the hectic holiday season 

There’s one very special person we think you need to put on your gift list this year… You!

The holidays can be a wonderful time of year but the flurry of activities can really stress a girl out.  Your relatives are coming into town to stay with you, the house needs tidying and you still need to find time to dig the decorations out of the attic.  Not to mention the added social occasions, the holiday season can start to feel like you’re on a treadmill without an off button!

Let’s dig into some great self-care ideas to get through this holiday season and, if your still shopping, (who isn’t?) we’ve added some gift ideas.  Let’s get started!

Exercise – Speaking of treadmills exercise is definitely one way to keep stress levels from spiking but the holiday season can wreak havoc on even the simplest of routines.  If you are finding it hard to make time for your regular workout take it down a notch by working in some quieter alternatives. 

  • Go for a walk – preferably in the sunshine especially if you struggle with seasonal affect.  Even better… go for a walk in nature and breath in the fresh air!
  • Trick yourself into adding steps – it might be time to pull out those tricks like parking in the back of the mall parking lot or taking the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Try a 5 minute lunch time yoga routine – have more time?  Mix it up with some Tai Chi or Pilates, both are great stress relieving activities
  • Stretch – tension can cause our bodies to get stiff, roll out a mat and stretch it out, end with a deep breathing routine


Sleep – Holiday stress can really affect your sleep, try going to bed before your tired and relax yourself with a good book.  Add a soothing tea and some relaxing music.  Make up your bed with comfy, natural fabrics for healthy zzz’s and while your at it, a gorgeous set of pj’s in natural fabrics can’t hurt. Eat well – According to research done on stress and holidays by the American Psychological Foundation the holidays have a particularly stressful impact on women.  Women tend to take charge of many holiday tasks like meal prep and decorating.  They also report an increase of stress during this time and tend to fall into bad habits to deal with their stress like comfort eating.  Vow to do better this year, instead of that sweet and salty snack manage stress by eating well, choose leafy greens, fresh juices hearty carbs like brown rice and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

The main problem during the holiday season is that it comes with all kinds of treats.  They are everywhere, gift wrapped candy boxes, cookie tins or on a tray at the office party… everywhere!  We know it’s a festive time, so, don’t deprive yourself but do monitor your intake.  Be the one to bring the veggie tray and eating something small and nutritional before a party will help you have better control around the Christmas cookies.


Respect down time – Downtime may be hard to find this time of year.  When you find it use it to do something comforting for yourself… 

Better still, schedule your down time and go get a massage… you’re worth it!  

Whatever you do, be wary of the phone.  According to a study by Lancaster University people use their smartphones for an average of five hours a day – about a third of the time they are awake! Learn to put the phone down for a while and enjoy some me time!  The holidays will look a lot more festive through rested eyes.


Say No! – The holidays can be a blitz of events for your calendar not to mention the ongoing demands of work and family.  It’s Christmas after all not “stressmas”!  Realizing your priorities ahead of the busy holiday season can help you decide on what you can and cannot do.  If family is your priority then that time rises to the top, two work parties easily becomes one when having to decide between the two.  Patti Breitman, co-author of the book How to Say No Without Feeling Guilty says it best, “It’s easy to say ‘no’ when you know what you are saying ‘yes’ to.”

Waste Time – How is this different than respecting your down time? This is specifically deciding you are going to squander time! Because really, there is value in shutting your brain off and doing, well, nothing. Stare at the walls if you want. Sip hot chocolate really slowly. Go to the library or bookstore and look at pretty pictures in a magazine. Binge watch Netflix or YouTube – it counts as doing nothing since the only thing you have to do is select your show or video and let it go! The next episode/video always loads on its own. You’ll be surprised how refreshed you feel just taking a “productivity” break.
